Add Context, Role, and Format
Give AI the background, perspective, and output shape it needs.
You need a useful answer for a real work situation, not a generic internet explanation.
Context explains the situation
Context can include audience, product, constraints, tone, available data, and what you have already tried.
Role can help, but it is not magic
A role like "act as a product marketer" can set perspective. It works best when paired with real context and a clear task.
Build the mental model
Context, role, and format solve different problems. Context anchors the situation, role selects a useful perspective, and format turns the response into something you can use next.
Relevant context beats more context
Include facts that change the recommendation: audience, objective, current state, evidence, limits, and previous attempts. A large background dump can hide the signal and make review harder.
A role is a lens, not expertise
“Act as a strategist” may influence vocabulary and priorities, but it does not give the model verified experience or accountability. Judge the output on its reasoning and evidence, not the authority of the assigned role.
A small architecture studio is considering AI for project administration.
Act as a consultant. Write recommendations for using AI.
Act as an operations adviser to a 12-person architecture studio. We lose time turning client meetings into tasks and weekly updates. Recommend three low-risk uses of AI we can test this month. For each, give the input, output, human review step, and one privacy risk. Use a table and avoid tools that require custom development.
The role now supports a real situation. The context narrows the business problem, while the format and boundaries force the recommendations to be testable rather than aspirational.
How much context is enough?
Start with the minimum facts a capable colleague would need. If the answer still depends on unknowns, ask AI to list its assumptions or ask you clarifying questions before producing the final result.
When using internal material, include only information you are permitted to share with that tool. Better context improves quality, but it never overrides privacy, confidentiality, or your organisation’s data policy.
Separate the three jobs
Rewrite one prompt so its context, perspective, and output shape are unmistakable. Then check whether the role adds anything useful.

Find the choice that creates the clearest risk or quality problem.
Role helps only when the task and context are real.
